ECOS technical expert Peter Beck presents the Japanese solar energy market in a EU-Japan Centre webinar.

The Japanese PV (photovoltaic) sector is a dynamic industry driven by ambitious climate targets and technological innovations, focusing on expanding solar energy to reduce import dependency and meet energy demand, with an emphasis on perovskite solar cells, smart grids, energy storage, and even space-based solar power. The government is encouraging private investment and introducing new commitments, such as the solar power obligation in Tokyo, to increase the share of renewable energy to up to 50% by 2040.

Several support systems, such as the feed-in tariff (FIT) combined with a feed-in premium (FIP) system, the Japanese CO2 pricing system, and a variety of additional policy measures, form a solid foundation for new investments in the integration of PV systems and the expansion of the power grid.

Foreign companies entering the Japanese solar market can establish themselves through various structures, including commercial agents, representative offices, branches, or full-fledged company formations. PV components are distributed through a large number of specialized wholesalers. Japan's Green Transformation (GX) strategy, which refers to the transformation of the entire economic and social system, creates great opportunities for European SMEs in the fields of advanced PV, storage, smart grid, and next-generation energy technologies. To be successful in the Japanese market, long-term commitment, strong local partnerships, and careful adaptation to Japanese business culture are required.
